Crazy that it's already 2021. I remember Y2k like it was yesterday....haha..I guess that's what happens when you get old! Turning 51 was humbling for sure, but I'm excited more than ever about all the opportunities to grow. These are scary times, with the pandemic hovering over all of us, and the economic fallout that it's causing around the world. The mental toll it's taking on a lot of us can't be overstated as well. Reach out to your friends and family just to catch up, to see how people are doing. It all sounds like a bunch of cliches but they are more true than ever. Everyday Grateful are two words that mean a lot to me. If you come at things with a grateful heart, you come at it with a softer heart...a friendlier one. We all need to be softer and more grateful in these times where division and hate seem to be the ongoing themes.
Today, I saw the news that Dr Dre had an aneurysm and is in the ICU...sounds like he's recovering so that's good news. He's 55 years old and has gotten in great shape the last few years, so you wouldn't think he would have these issues...he's also worth 800 million dollars so you'd think that he probably would be doing intense health check ups each year. I had a classmate of mine pass away from cardiac arrest a few weeks ago in December. He was our all everything athlete at our high school and the nicest guy you could meet. He leaves behind 5 kids who were already without their mom who passed away almost 20 years ago. Man, I have 4 kids and my wife..so this hits home hard.
My point in writing about all of this is just to remind all my friends and family to go get your full body health check done after things get back to normal. I know hospitals and clinics aren't the safest place to be at right now, but I still wanted to get this message out. Even if you get a good body check result, it's not a guarantee but from my personal experience, you still should get it done. I do yearly check ups and a couple of years ago, we found one of the valves to my heart have some build up and clogged about 30%. I didn't feel discomfort in training or running, so I was surprised. The cardiologist said there's not much to worry about right now, as there is a margin of error...but it still was a wake up call. My doctor said often times, people feel they are healthy because they work out and train hard, they don't feel they should have any heart or blood pressure issues, so they don't get a thorough check up. I'm here to just tell you to go get it done. We need to do what we can to make sure we are around and healthy for our family.
What did I do with the news that one of the valves in my heart was partially blocked? I try to have oatmeal each day for breakfast, wife is making me eat more salads and veggies, and we're trying to have less red meat. It's definitely not easy. I can do better, and vow to do better in 2021. I was already taking some cholesterol medicine because high cholesterol is in our genes, and my doctor recommended another does of another drug as well. Not a fan of taking these, but the benefits for me outweigh the risks by a lot. As we get older, we do need to change our portions, what we eat....our metabolism naturally goes down. I try to do what my 83 year old dad does.....he constantly makes adjustments to his diet each year.....less meat each year...more veggies ..drink lots of water. I can't go fully vegan or vegetarian for now, but I think we're headed to at least the vegetarian part in the future. I'm glad at least I know I have this issue, so I make sure I don't push myself too crazy in my work outs. The more you know the better.
I'll sign off for now for my first blog of the new year. Hopefully it didn't bum you out too much. Being everyday grateful to means just appreciating each day and the process, to slow down, to take deep breaths, remember where you came from, and where you want to be...and go make sure you get your full body check up done! Love you!
